Krogs - Did you son get comped a room for the bug troubles? That is so gross. They may put restrictions on B's driving; limiting to daylight, only going so far, or maybe areas he knows really well? Your grandson sounds cute. His sister is older, he's not catching up or surpassing her in age, his frustration is understandable. ;)

Amazingly Mara only ate two snack-size Kit Kats today. She did well at swim lessons, I ran for half hour, and we're both tired enough to go to sleep at a decent hour. Ah, November already. 11-1-11. I want to take a picture of my clock on 11-11-11 at 11:11.

This weekend was supposed to be G's and my last visit for a while (getting caught in an unexpected blizzard in eastern PA on the way back from NYC has made me wary of long distance winter travel), but plans changed. Kinda bummed we won't see each other. Maybe the weather will stay calm until December. Fingers crossed. Otherwise we'll have to wait until next year.

      Enjoy your evening.

      Hope Joe is alright.

Joe!! Glad to hear from you!!!

Krogs: When I had cataract surgery, I remember driving with a patch over one eye. It was only for a day or so as I recall (my memory is fuzzy on that). You can drive but you have to remember about the lack of peripheral vision. You have to turn your head more from side to side.
That was so cute about the grandson. It won't mean anything to him but I felt the same way with 3 older brothers when I was little but now that we're all older, I'm glad to be the youngest!!

Lizzie: I hope maybe there's a stretch of good weather still when you can go visit. You're wise, though, to not travel in the winter hazards. Even with a 2-hour trip, I don't go if there's a chance of freezing rain or even heavy fog.

Joe - Glad you're alive and kickin' - even if not very high

Lizzie - I know what you mean about the bad weather driving. It's not worth the risk. I do hope you get a visit in.

Z - You must have had cataracts at a young age too. Did you have them in both eyes? They called B's cataracts "fish egg" cataracts - common in diabetics and anyone on steroids for a long time. Described as a bunch of little balls under the lens distorting it. Very fast growing.

      Happy Hump Day!

      Welcome back, joe!

Lizzie, the weather is clear on this end through the weekend. It should be in the low 60s and sunny, so if you want to drive this way, it looks like a good time to do it. I am going to visit on Friday...

I am so happy to hear that B's first surgery is scheduled! Both of your lives will change so markedly for the better once that is done. And, I know that he remembers how beautiful you are, but now he'll get a superior view. Little Pucky has diabetic cataracts supposedly, though he can still bat a fly into his mouth in a single blow, so they cannot be too far progressed... (Lizzie and queen, before you both freak-out about my fly-eatin' roommate, I should tell you that he's a cat...). I think I mentioned that my mother had congenital cataracts that were removed when I was a kid. That was before laser cataract surgery and they did it through conventional surgery by removing and replacing the lens. It made a huge difference in her life, though she still has to wear glasses and I think is still considered legally blind. And blond. She's legally blond, too. No one believes that I came out of her...

I finally watched the end of Project Runway! It turned out just as I thought it should. Are we still on a PR Spoiler Alert or can we chat about that?

I've been given some PFO awards, as you will see. I keep emailing the award notifications to J. I told him that I am adding them to my cv (resume) -- I am applying for a job. He just laughed and told me that the "Fed Wifey Award" will be sure to get me an interview in higher-ed

Speaking of work... it's back to work for me...!

sorry for not posting sooner. in addition to having some issues with my older son Sean that are resulting in me paying not only an additional 331.00 this month in car insurance, but I am also going to have to pick up his part of the rent this month $550.00 plus he already owes me $140.00 from last month and now 2 months of cell phone too. I can't even shut the phone down because he's on my account and I'll catch a penalty for it. Plus both he and my daughter pay late every month so I've been paying an extra 15 bucks a line for late charges. I now advised them they are responsible for all the charges, etc as I'm done putting up with this crap. In addition to that, I'm having an issue with the car dealer I bought the crown vic from. the axle went, the brakes went and all kinds of crap. so I put my complaint on a couple of site where there were already complaints up about him. I also filed complaints with the better business bureau and DMV. He refuses to reimburse me for the over $900.00 worth of repairs I had to put into it, then on top of that he has been making all kinds of rude remarks plus putting my name and address out there on the internet. his manager also called and threatened my son David and the scumbag put my number out there via the net on a couple of gay dating sites offering my so called services. So I had to call the local po-po up and file a report just to cover my butt just in case anything happens. the cops who came to the house were cool and said I was doing everything legal including the posting on the complaint sites and to just keep going about things the way I am and everything will be ok. One of them, surprise, surprise, also gave me the number of a court clerk he knew in our area and they helped me file a civil suit against the guy and the dealership and once the clerk looked at all the complaints and then they ran the guys name thru the courts database and it seems he's had a number of lawsuits filed against him for the same crap. So the clerk said he could explain and show me how to file for an order of execution because the guy has lost a bunch of the cases other people filed and never paid them. he told me because of his position, he can't contact the people, but I can and show them how to do the paperwork so they can get paid. The other thing is a couple of news stations have contacted me and others through the website and they are doing backgrounds on the guy for a story. It's my hope to not only get my money back, but to make sure this guy doesn't do this to anyone else. The thing that really bugs me is he has absolutely no remorse for what he does and just keeps doing it again and again. Ladies, some of yoour men, most of them either don't deserve to be locked up in the first place or should have been released a long time ago. This guy is the perfect example as to someone who needs to be locked up as he keeps commiting the same crime over and over and over again. He just does not friggin learn. anyway, here's the link to this complaint site. in addition if you guys want to look more, just google "the car place" Somers dave and feast your eyes on this guys past exploits. This guy has even gone as far as to post that the bbb said they would take a bribe from him and hire is score with them. The BBB? Really? a bribe? Wow that's all I can say. anyway here's the link. feel free to post if you wish. this guy is the true definition of ass clown if you type the term into an online dictionary, his picture pops up-lol have an awesome day all. I have teachers here all day for david as I have to take him half way across the state to a specialist appointment on Friday. Joe

You go Joe! I was going to suggest you file a Small Claims lawsuit against him in Court but you're way ahead of me.

CG - I think we're good to go on the Project Runway chatter. I didn't think the woman who won should have won, even though personality wise she was very likeable. This time it seemed to be all about whether the winner could "establish a brand" and go with a whole line of items, rather than which was the most creative and most skilled. I thought the little guy with dark hair should have won. BTW - I could not stand the guy who came in 2nd!! And I didn't like the fashion designs of the "urban girl."

      TGIF!!!!!!

B's advisor called - 11/11/11 is a fed holiday so they're releasing him on 11/10/11! He just has to go down to the HWH to sign a bunch of papers. He's talked to his SR PO but her schedule is so full that we don't have a day to meet with her yet other than 11/29 when he is already in the city for his post-op check.

A few of my patient's were asking me today what I was doing for Thanksgiving - I thought OMG - it is only 3 weeks away. Guess we better start talking TG!

      Have a great weekend everyone.

Good news - getting out a day early!! Woo hoo!! Be sure to have him ask about submitting report forms online. I hear some places they can do that now.

I had a grueling week at work - with an overload of work due to people being gone on vacation or at a conference. I'm glad it's over! I even stopped at two grocery stores with free wine tastings on the way home. Tasted several excellent wines and feelin' fine! I did my week's grocery shopping too so I don't have to go anywhere tomorrow. I just may stay in my PJ's all day long. I've got a Michigan and an Oregon football game to watch. I have to record the Michigan one, I think, because it comes on so early out here. Sunday, Z Jr. and I are going to visit Mr. Z. Hope it's not as foggy as it's been the last couple of days cause they'll delay visiting if it is. Go DUCKS! They're playing a potentially tough game against one of our big rivals, Washington - and they're playing up there. I hear the students up there are all wearing t-shirts saying "Beat Oregon. Nothing else matters." Kinda nice to be so important. LOL!

So - anyone now watching Top Chef now that Project Runway is over? CG - Have you watched that art competition show on Bravo - The Next Great Artist? It's kind of interesting - always makes me want to do some art when I watch it. Some things are interesting - some stuff they do is just plain weird. Would be really interested in what you think about the show. When they announce the challenge, I always think of what I might do. I think I have great ideas - I just have no talent in executing what's in my brain. I have a great idea of a drawing I want to do but no drawing ability. It's frustrating.

I did a photo shoot for a structural engineering firm today. The weather was sunny, and kinda warm, so perfect day to take pictures of a building. Good to be outside.

Yippee for the getting out news!!

Mara's at her dad's tonight, so I spent the evening coming up with creative things to send to G. I Photoshopped my head on Victoria's Secret catalog pictures. They turned out pretty well. I think he'll like them. ;)

Did anyone catch Project Runway Behind the Seams last night? Tim Gunn is so sweet. Totally watching Top Chef. Tried to watch Project Accessory but am not getting into it.

Looking forward to Michigan v Iowa. I should be home from Mara's soccer game just in time for kick-off. Pink locker rooms will not deter Michigan men!

Penn State's former defensive coordinator was charged with a host of child sex abuse charges. Last week Joe Paterno became the winningest coach. Sad day for PSU.

NPR did a piece on the economics of private prisons. The conclusion is they make a little money for the town where they're located, but a bucket load for the investors and shareholders. The top company's 2010 net was $1.7 billion, the CEO's earning were in excess of $3 million.

Did everyone remember to turn back their clocks?

My morning started with seeing a buck on the lawn when I was letting one of the dogs out. He was beautiful.

It is a beautiful day in the city. Very autumnal and sunny. I went to the farmers market this morning and bought brussel sprouts and butternut squash and tonight I am going to make a pot of butternut, white bean, ginger soup.

The for-profit prison thing is such a racket! J spent two years awaiting sentencing in a for-profit county facility that is run by a corporation owned by a bunch of local politicians, many who are in the criminal justice division -- no potential conflict of interest there... The facility is quite literally condemnable -- the cells had dirt floors and peeling paint and there were rats and roaches in the cells. There were pigeons flying around the dining hall that would soil the food on the trays. The idea is that people will plead or snitch just to get transferred and apparently it works. I've never been treated more like lowly dirt than when I went there, and that was just to visit behind filthy glass for 50 minutes per week. Sometimes, the glass would be so dirty that J and I could not really see each other's faces. I know that I cannot even begin to imagine the conditions that must have been on the inside and as bad as it sounds, I know that J will never tell me the truth about how bad it was because he does not like to upset me. What a scam that all is!

Throughout the entire season of PR, I thought that Anya had the most conceptual approach to design and was the most humble when accepting and assimilating criticism. I also thought that Viktor's designs were amazingly inspired and well executed, though I did agree with the judges that he made some bad editorial calls with his final collection. I had a warm feeling for Kimberly and some of her designs, though I was not taken with her final collection at all. Josh's sour grapes sense of entitlement just annoyed me to no end.

As soon as Top Chef begins to load onto hulu I will start watching. I always enjoy following that show. I have only seen one episode of the Bravo artist show because they are not usually accessible on hulu. I would be interested to watch it but have so sense of it yet.

Yay, Krog! I am excited for you and B and your 11/10 celebration!

I am LOVING this extra hour!

It was rainy and cold here yesterday morning when we set out to visit but part way there, the sun came out and the autumn colors were beautiful. It was quite warm up where the prison is. Gorgeous drive there and back. And to spend an entire day with Z Jr. and his dad, all together, was so great!! Z Jr. just talked and talked and talked with his dad. He shared some of his confusion about where to go next with his college and career and also thinking about dropping out of college to work and pursue his audio engineering career. He told me later he really wanted to talk with his dad about it but he felt like he might be disappointing him if he did that because, while all of my side of the family has Ph.D's for generations, his dad's side of the family has no one who's earned a 4-year degree even. I asked afterward if he had wanted his dad's advice (because he didn't give it - just listened and asked some questions), he said no - he just wanted to talk with him. He said he'd realized that we're all adults now - he's no longer a child. Ah - the confusion of the early 20's. I felt a bit helpless to help - just suggested he go to the Career Center at school and talk with someone there and with the head of the audio engineering department.

Anyway - it was a wonderful day and Z Jr. even came over for dinner afterward. The first time he and I have spent time together without his girlfriend there for a long while. Very nice! I had made apple crisp for him, which of course he loved. Sent some home with him too.

The prison added one more thing to the whole process, of course. It's like they always have to be changing it up all the time - adding rules and then forgetting about that one after a while and then adding a different one. Now we're required, at the top of the form we fill out when going in, to put our state driver's license # or state ID # across the top. ??? Is that so they can check for illegal immigrants? Since, in our state, you can't get a driver's license or state ID if you're here illegally? Who knows! It's not a problem for us but just an extra thing. Stupid.

Z Jr. was funny, too, when buying food at the vending machine. He came back and said, "I was going to buy a sandwich but I draw the line at $5 for a sandwich." And it wasn't even his money he was spending - it was mine! He is very principled - even more so than I am - and I like that about him.
