      HMP Sheppey Cluster (Elmley) :: Visiting Information, Q&A

      People worry about travelling to see their loved one and being turned away, especially on that first visit.
      Please help ease visiting worries by sharing any experience you have of the visiting arrangements at
      HMP Sheppey Cluster (Elmley).

      Share updated information, tips and advice on the do's and don'ts;
      what to wear, what not to wear, what items you can/can't take to visiting, etc.
      so that others can be prepared and hopefully, enjoy that special time with their friend/loved one.

      Social visits

      Monday - Sunday: 13:45 – 16:15.

      Booking information:

      Additional information:

      Visit centre opening times 12:00-16:30.

      There is an unsupervised children's play area; and a refreshment bar is also available, in the visits hall.

      There is disabled access to the prison and also disabled parking. There is free parking for visitors.

      A booklet is available in the visit centre with all details you will need.

      From 1/4/11 new receptions will need to book visits 24 hours in advance. Visitors can have one reception visit within the first 7 days.

      Clothes can be brought in within 28 days of prisoner entering the establishment.

      Money can be sent in by cheque, postal order or cash can be sent in by special delivery.

      You may be entitled to help with your travel expenses. Please visit the Assisted prison visits scheme page for more details.

      How to get there:

      Bus: ABBA Coaches provide a coach service from London Victoria to HMP Elmley. For details call 020 8692 6636. Chalkwell (tel: 01795423982) run a coach leaving Sittingbourne railway station at 12.10 pm, Monday to Friday, arriving at Standford Hill/Swaleside at 12.03 and Elmley at 12.36 pm. The return service leaves Elmley at 16.40, arriving at Sittingbourne at 17.06 (buses 322/324). On saturdays buses run from Sheerness station to the prison (buses 364/367).

      Train: Take a Sheerness-bound train and alight at Sheerness station. The prison is 8 miles from the station. Bus and taxi services are available from here.

      Car: Follow A249 signposted to Sittingbourne and Sheerness, then over the bridge to the Isle of Sheppey. At the end of the dual carriage go straight across first roundabout, on the second roundabout take the third turning Towards Minster and Eastchurch. Go straight across at the next roundabout and stay on the Lower Road until you come to another roundabout. Take the second turning, continue a short distance to the next roundabout and take the third turning towards the prison (signposted). Continue down the road where you will see a mini roundabout. Go straight across and follow the road to the bottom. There are 5 traffic calmers, and Elmley prison is at the end of the road on the left.

      Assisted Prison Visits Scheme

      If you visit a close relative or partner in prison, you may be able to get help with the cost of travel through the Assisted Prison Visits Scheme. To qualify, you must be aged 18 or over and on a low income. Further information and application forms are available from the Assisted Prison Visits Unit. Information is also available in Braille and on cassette or CD.
