      The Wayne Brown Correctional Facility was dedicated December 17, 1991. It is Corrections Standards Authority rated to house 250 inmates and is designed to be expanded to house 450 inmates. the facility is designed to house maximum, medium, and minimum-security inmates. Generally persons pending court processes or sentenced to one year or less for misdemeanor crimes are housed in County Jail (as of Oct. 1, 2011 any one convicted of a non-violent low level felony and sentenced to 3 years or less will be housed in County Jail). Anyone else will be transferred to state prison. Every person housed in a state prison was held in a county jail first. Inmates who have been sentenced to the County Jail and who meet the criteria to be housed in minimum security, may be assigned to work on government projects or for local non-profit organizations.

      The Wayne Brown Correctional Facility is inspected annually by the Nevada County Civil Grand Jury, Fire Marshall, Health Department and Environmental Health, and by the Corrections Standards Authority every two years.

      The Jail Commander, a Sheriff's Captain, directs and oversees the facility with a sworn Lieutenant as an executive officer and a Correctional Lieutenant who is in charge of day to day jail operations.

      the Captain is responsible for the overall operation of the Corrections Division including all jails, holding facilities, inmate transportation and court security in the county.

      The Executive Lieutenant handles all budget matters, kitchen, laundry facilities, maintenance, and clerical staff. The Correctional Lieutenant handles staffing, training, inmate discipline and the day to day operation of the facility.

      The Wayne Brown Correctional Facility is a Type II facility that houses individuals pending arraignment, during trial, and upon sentence of commitment. The facility has the capability to house 250 inmates.

      the jail facility provides to the community over 12,000 hours of inmate labor to various government agencies and nonprofit organizations each year.

      Visitation

      Each inmate is allowed one 1/2 hour visit per day, Tuesday through Friday. Each inmates specific visiting time rotates on a daily basis depending upon where the inmate is housed. Visitors are encouraged to check the on-line inmate list or call in advance for each inmates specific visiting time. All visitors must be at least 18 years old unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. To expedite the process you can download the appropriate visiting slip (Public / Professional) and fill it out prior to your visit. Please call (530) 265-1291 for more specific information regarding visitation.

      Money

      Correctional Staff will not accept cash money or checks either through the US mail or in person at the Lobby.       Inmates are allowed to receive mail including letters, cards and pictures. Inmates may also receive magazines and paperback books provided they are sent directly from the publisher or reputable retailer and are in their original mailing envelope. Any mail containing any pornography, violence, or hate group writings or articles will not be accepted. Packages will not be accepted.

      Miminmum and Maximum Security Info

      Minimum Security

      The Minimum Security section of the Wayne Browne Correctional Facility has 94 beds in a dorm style setting. Minimum security houses both males and females with a co-ed dayroom. Only sentenced inmates may be housed in the Minimum Security unit. Inmates are screened by the classification unit to determine suitability for Minimum Security housing.

      Some of the factors for Minimum Security housing include:
      • Criminal history
      • Violent behavior
      • Security risk
      • In Custody behavior
      • Willingness to meet grooming standards
      • Willingness and ability to work

      Minimum Security inmates work at various job assignments inside and outside the facility and are given the opportunity to acquire basic work skills. Job assignments include kitchen, laundry, library, and facility maintenance. Inmates assigned to work outside the facility work with other government agencies and non-profit organizations.

      Maximum Security

      Maximum Security is utilized to house inmates who are violent offenders, on parole holds, who are going through the court process and awaiting sentence or inmates who have been sentenced but fail to meet the qualifications for Minimum Security housing.
